Quality, Cyprus based wine makers have only over the past decade started to emerge on the commercial market, now, the country can proudly boast ownership, to several serious wine producers, all of whom are now more than capable of rivalling their highly competitive Greek counterparts.

The traditional climate regarding the basic appreciation of wine, has also changed, with less promotion of the rough, less appealing village wine, which alas, tended to sear, rather than satisfy the palate, now thankfully relegated to home use only, being used primarily to help season in the making of the traditional Cyprus sausage.

Part of this new found appreciation of the domestic wine market, is all down to the new breed of innovative winemakers, men like Marios Kolios, who has structured his whole winemaking venture on three basic principles, his wine is of a very high quality, his prices are very reasonable, and he has created a totally user friendly winery, where visitors are actively encouraged.

The Kolios winery is indeed impressive, its setting alone makes it worth the trip up to Statos Agios Fotios, this is the nearby village, and is set 3.000 feet above sea level, being credited as the highest village in the Paphos area.

The surrounding Kolios vineyards, take up more than 100 hectares of prime, plump, producing vines, and since 1999 when the winery produced its first 70.000 bottles; sales have continued to rise steadily, with an annual production now in excess of 250.000 bottles.
The building that houses the visitor’ tasting area, the actual processing plant, plus the basement cellar area, have been meticulously designed to make the most of the space available, and at the same time gives visitors a little bit more to look at, in the form of the stunning views to be enjoyed, with glass in hand, looking out the large picture windows in the tasting, and combination dining room. The latter is in full use all year round, as groups of no less than ten people can phone up, and book to arrive for a home cooked lunch, for a reasonable set price, with all the house wine they can drink, and very nice it is too.
Marios is wise enough to realise that the local ex patriot market is of prime importance, and every week, busloads of foreign residents from Paphos, and Limassol, descend on the winery to either purchase their monthly supply, or treat the visit as a jolly nice, morning outing, there to sample the wines, enjoy the relaxing setting, over a hearty lunch. The Kolios Maratheftico red is a good choice for those who want to quaff a friendly glass of red of an evening, the dry white is also a good bet, and interestingly the Kolios Rose’ has been voted by the Brits abroad, as probably being one of the best produced on the island.

The Winery is open to visitors from 8:00am to 7:00pm during Summer and from 8:00am to 5:00pm during winter.

Lunches can be arranged if booked in advance with minimum one day notice.
